Bolivar Central High School placed on light lockdown after student brings gun to campus

BOLIVAR, Tenn. — On Wednesday, September 11, Bolivar Central High School students were ready for the day ahead, however this day was cut short due to one student stashing a gun in the ceiling.

Around 10 a.m., several WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News tipsters informed us that parents were notified by the Hardeman County Board of Education to follow the guidelines of how to check their students out of school for the day.

For the safety of the students, the school was placed on a light lockdown.

We arrived to Bolivar Central to find the Tennessee Highway Patrol and members of the Bolivar Police Department at the scene.

While at the scene parents expressed worry for their children’s well being and were trying their best to wait patiently. Others could be overheard questioning why they were informed later in the day of something that happened earlier that morning.

We reached out to the Hardeman County Board of Education, however they did not share any further information.

In a press release later shared by the Bolivar Police Department, authorities say “The student responsible has been taken into custody and the firearm has been confiscated without incident.”

Chief Mike Jones with the BPD shared “We are committed to the safety and well being of our students and staff, this situation was handled quickly and we will continue working with the school and community to ensure everyone remains safe.”

Bolivar City Mayor McTizic also shares that they “We are thankful for the swift actions of our local law enforcement and school staff, the safety of our community is our top priority.”

At this time police have not confirmed whether the student or parents will face charges for this situation as the investigation remains ongoing.
