Concerns regarding threats of violence towards local schools continue
TRENTON, Tenn. — In our continuing coverage, threats of violence on school property have been a conversation on social media. Now parents and community residents wonder if it’s all a hoax or is there reason for concern.
According to Sonya Campbell, the principal at Peabody High School, Friday was a normal day of classes until it was heightened by a heavy police presence.
She said a school threat was discovered by students that saw posts on social media that something would happen at school.
That’s when we spotted parents picking up their children for early dismissal which Campbell stated was within their policy.
Although the incident was investigated and declared a hoax, some parents that were still shaken up by an arrest made at Peabody on Wednesday, were still outraged.
“My son and my daughter both go to Peabody. My son is a junior and I asked him about it when I saw it on the WBBJ website. I asked him and he was like he didn’t even know that there was a kid up there with a gun. You’re just kinda lost for words cause that’s the school your kids go to and then they don’t even tell you nothing,” said one concerned parent.
We were also told of a school threat at Savannah Christian Academy that happened around late August.
We spoke to the Hardin County Sheriff’s Department who did confirm to us that they were investigating a possible threat made at the school. Upon their investigation, by information that they received from a third party, there was a juvenile who was arrested for making a threat toward that school.
Several parents said they found out about the threat from a local newspaper article. And then a couple of hours later, they were informed through an email by the school.
Carroll County, Gibson County and the city of Martin also experienced these alleged threats. We received confirmation from Carroll and Gibson County officials that there were no threats, lockdowns or incidents at any schools.
The Martin Police Department also told us that they investigated the incident and that there are no immediate threats at this time.
