Crockett student arrested after using threatening language at school

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE CROCKETT COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT:

STUDENT ARRESTED FOR USING THREATENING LANGUAGE TO CONTINUE FEAR AND HYSTERIA

ALAMO, TN – September 16, 2024 – This afternoon, investigators with the Crockett County Sheriff’s Department arrested a juvenile for violation of TCA 39-16-517 which covers threats of mass violence (school) after the student admitting to using threatening language today at school.

Our release stated yesterday that we take all threats seriously, students were reminded this morning by school administration that there would be consequences for anyone who continues to share messages that have been proven to be false, and that anyone who attempted to disrupt the learning environment by making new threats would be dealt with by law enforcement officials.

In this case, the student who heard the remarks this afternoon acted quickly and reported it through the appropriate channels. The suspected student was isolated from the other students, the backpack was checked finding evidence of vandalism of school property, and other measures were taken to ensure the student body was safe. The suspect was not found in possession of a weapon and the motive for making these threatening remarks has not yet been established. As a reminder, the law does not allow us to reveal the identity in juvenile matters and we ask you not to post any identifying information in the comments.

The suspected student was removed from school today and will be facing criminal charges in Juvenile Court as well as disciplinary actions from the Crockett County School Board.

All students were safe today and no hysteria/fear ensued because of following this process. Several have asked us – will the school use the metal detectors today or will they use them tomorrow? No one will reveal what days the school will/will not use metal detectors. As such, we encourage parents to check backpacks/personal belongings, monitor their kids social media/devices, account for any firearms in your home, and ensure they are properly stored. Finally, we encourage you to communicate with your children regarding our commitment to keeping them safe, the importance of regulating their speech, the right/wrong way to report safety concerns, and seeking counseling when they need a listening ear.

We appreciate our school administration, homeland security, and SROs. When we all want the same thing, when we all work together, and when we are all communicating – the solutions are easier than the problems we face. We are proud of the school staff as well as our students – they are the best and we hope they have a great rest of the week!
