Liberty Tech holds Career and Technical Education Tour

JACKSON, Tenn. — Students at one local school had a unique experience Thursday.

Cosmetology, culinary and automotive classes were just a few courses available at Liberty Technology High School. The Career and Technical Education Tour began thanks to a grant given by the Tennessee Department of Education.

The grant was for non-traditional events. Liberty applied for the grant and were accepted. The grant covered several things such as the cost for children to take the bus to the high school.

“We offer industry certifications in all of our CTE courses so that they’re ready for that job or career or they’re already in it while they’re at the high school,” said Megan Aiosa Weaver, lead CTE teacher.

Students had the chance to get hands-on experience in courses like cosmetology, agriculture and entrepreneurship.

“They hear about it at home, they hear about it at their schools, but to see it and interact with it and learn that they can actually do this just elevates it,” said Weaver.

Some of Liberty’s high schoolers were selected to guide students throughout the tour.

“I feel good about being selected. I think it’s not only a great opportunity for me, but for the students that are coming in because they get to see what Liberty has to offer and everything their school can do for them in their career, military or college readiness,” said Berkley Roberts, 12th grade student and tour guide.

Liberty has definitely opened me up more because I wasn’t really interested in doing things. Since I came here, I’ve been involved in a lot of things that I didn’t know I would be involved in so it gives students good opportunities,” said Mikiyah Robinson, 12th grade student and tour guide.

The tour has been going on since Wednesday and will continue until Friday morning with another group of students.

“I think Liberty is a great school. Liberty is definitely on the come up, so I think y’all should definitely consider coming over here,” said Roberts.

There were also classes for teachers to learn about hydroponic towers.
