TBI investigates officer-involved shooting in Hardeman County
HARDEMAN COUNTY, Tenn. — Special agents of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Hardeman County.
Officials say a shooting suspect fled from officers in Hardeman County and opened fire on a state trooper.
At the request of 25th Judicial District Attorney General Mark Davidson, TBI special agents are investigating the circumstances leading to an officer-involved shooting that occurred Monday afternoon in Hardeman County.
Preliminary information indicates that just before 1:20 in the afternoon, Hardeman County Sheriff’s Department dispatch received a shooting call off Highway 18 in Hardeman, near the Madison County line.
According to the TBI, after the shooting, the suspect fled the scene with an infant in the vehicle, which led to a pursuit and and exchange of gunfire between a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper and the suspect.
Officials say the shooter fled the scene on Highway 18, where a THP trooper intercepted the suspect’s vehicle around 1:30 p.m.
The suspect refused to stop and shot the trooper. The trooper then returned fire at the moment the vehicle crashed just south of Highway 100. The driver died at the scene.
TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews.
The TBI has confirmed the incident began as a domestic violence situation where two women were shot at the original scene. One of the women were transported to the Regional One hospital in Memphis with critical injuries. The other was taken to a Jackson hospital for treatment.
The investigation is active and ongoing, and will determine whether the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or if he was struck by the troopers gunfire.
Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the district attorney general for his further review and consideration.
