Project Care feeds over 300 senior citizens in Gibson County

GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn. — An annual event returns this year to provide Gibson County senior citizens with a delicious Thanksgiving dinner.

It’s an event that has been happening for more than 30 years, organized by the Gibson County Office on Aging. ‘Project Care’ provides traditional Thanksgiving meals to Gibson County senior citizens.

“We have turkey, dressing, peas, potatoes, cranberry sauce, rolls, the pie — it’s a homemade pie,” said Pam Dethloff, director for the Gibson County Office on Aging.

Elected officials, first responders and various community members came together to feed more than 300 senior citizens this year.

“Wonderful experience with all of the elected officials coming in to prepare the plates and to send them out to where people can have a nice thanking meals,” said Mayor of Bradford Dwayne Reynolds.

After the meals are packaged, volunteers, first responders and motorcyclists hand deliver the meals.

“Its one of the events I look forward to every year, just because everyone is here, it’s early! It gets your day started off right on Thanksgiving. It reiterates the meaning of Thanksgiving,” said Mayor of Gibson County Nelson Cunningham.

Many of these senior citizens are homebound and do not get the chance to enjoy a traditional thanksgiving meal with their families.

“We just want to brighten their day and let them know we have not forgotten them,” said Dethloff.

Organizers say the goal is to not only deliver meals, but also to raise awareness on the needs of senior citizens and provide services to enhance their physical, mental and social wellbeing.
