Family, friends gather for breakfast tradition at Old Country Store
JACKSON, Tenn. — Brooks Shaw’s Old Country Store has a decades-long tradition of serving a breakfast buffet that is all about family and friends coming from all over to enjoy some time together.
Shaw spoke with us about this tradition and why it means so much to them to keep it alive.
“It really embodies our position as a landmark of the community,” Shaw said. “So you’ll have people come in that came 30 years ago with just two people. Then they had kids, and then those kids grew up and got married and had kids. So that two from 30 years ago has turned to a 25 today. So it’s really just that perfect thing of strangers meeting in line and then the next year they come together as friends.”
This event has been held for 40 years, and for one family, they have been a part of it since the very beginning.
“It’s very unique for people to have traditions that are this long-standing anymore,” said Melody Cain. “So we’re grateful for the store to continue this, and for Brooks and his family — I know it’s a tradition — but for some of us, it’s kind of our big family tradition too.”
Of course, it is not just a simple breakfast meal that happens at the Old Country Store. There are a variety of things going on like live music, apple cider tastings, and much more.
“Santa Claus makes a visit from 8 to 12 for one last pit stop before his big trip tonight,” said Shaw. “We have gift card specials today only. 25% off gift card purchases. We’re talking about our memberships for next year. Hometown memberships, which is like exclusive discounts, or a season pass to the Old Country Store.”
If you missed this year’s, event do not worry. Doors open at 5:30 in the morning, and the last table is sat at 2:00 in the afternoon, if you want to attend next year.
Shaw also told us that they will have served anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000 people on Christmas Eve.
