The season of holiday gift returns kicks off in the Hub City

JACKSON, Tenn. — After enjoying Christmas with family and friends, residents are heading back to the stores to get that perfect item.

Elizabeth Parnell says she is returning to the store to exchange pants for her husband.

“So, I am returning some pants today because I am terrible estimator of size. So I am going to exchange for a different size,” said Parnell, returning holiday gifts.

According to a study done by CivicScience in 2023 regarding expected holiday gift returns, 59% of people ages 18-24 plan to or already returned their holiday gifts. While data collected for those that are ages 55 and up suggested that 88% of people within the given age range did not plan to return their gifts.

Parnell says the gifts she was given, however, were perfect.

“People did a great job this year and sometimes I buy my own gifts, that’s what moms do right? But no, they did a great job this year,” said Parnell.

The CivicScience study also showed that men are more likely to return their gifts than women are.

“My wife got the curling irons or something — she was supposed to be getting the brush. So she got me out returning it today since I am off of work and she’s working. I don’t mind, I’m in the school system I love it, and enjoying this Christmas season,” said Tyron Cole, returning holiday gifts.

He also adds that he won’t be returning any items but instead regifting them.

“It was some gloves, some socks that I don’t need so I probably will regift it and give it away,” said Cole.

Along with that, he says this Christmas was pretty good.

“Santa Claus was good to me better than myself but ain’t nobody like Jesus, the greatest gift of all,” said Cole.
