Marvin Umbarger
Marvin Lavoy Umbarger, age 82, resident of Somerville, Tennessee and husband of Edith Lorraine McBerry Umbarger, departed this life Sunday evening, December 29, 2024 at his home.
Marvin was born October 27, 1942 in Somerville, the son of the late Edward James Umbarger and Lillian Marie Henley Wiles (Jeff Wiles). He graduated from the Fayette County School System and was employed as a foreman for Memphis Light, Gas & Water for 35 years before his retirement. Marvin was married February 12, 1967 to Edith Lorraine McBerry Umbarger and was a member of Mt. Carmel Cumberland Presbyterian Church near Somerville.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and the Shriner’s Berclair and Somerville lodges. He was a transport driver for Shriner’s Crippled Children’s Hospital for many years and enjoyed Civil War history.
Mr. Umbarger is survived by his wife of 57 years, Edith Umbarger; two daughters, Teresa Lea Schmidt of Lebanon, TN and Lisa Marie Joyner (Timothy) of Somerville, TN; his brother, Willie Jeff Wiles of Somerville, TN; three grandchildren, Vincent Schmidt (Makayla) of Ripley, TN, Beonica Pickard (Terry) of Arlington, TN and Hunter Joyner (Nyx) of Somerville, TN; his bonus grandson, Jimmy Sollux (Kat); nine great-grandchildren, Angela Schmidt, Jasper Schmidt, Andrew Schmidt, Eli Joyner, Eason Pickard, Hannah Pickard, Luna Joyner, Marisal Joyner and Octavia Sollux; and a special granddaughter-in-law, Cherami Hewgley (Jonathan).
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James P. Umbarger.
A visitation for Mr. Umbarger will be from 1 to 3 P.M. Sunday, January 5, 2025 at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland. Funeral Services will be at 3 P.M. Sunday, January 5, 2025 at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. Lori Kleinjan officiating. Interment will be in Memphis Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Bartlett, Tennessee.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers will be Will Wiles, Alan Wiles, Timothy Joyner, Hunter Joyner, Tony Schmidt, Vincent Schmidt and Joseph Cummins. Honorary pallbearers will be William Hogan, Randy Walk, Harold Cook, Eli Joyner and Jimmy Sollux.
