Tips to keep your home warm this winter

JACKSON, Tenn. — Our WBBJ 7 Eyewitness Storm Team has informed us of the recent drops of cold weather. Here are ways to protect your home from the cold.

“We would encourage people to seal doors and windows to keep the heated air inside by placing weather stripping and caulk around the windows and doors. You can help keep the chilly air from coming through into the indoors,” said Rita Alexander, vice president of human resources and member services for Gibson Electric Connect.

Make sure that small spaces and pipes are sealed. Weather strips and caulk can be purchased at local hardware stores.

“Sealing games around piping, dryer vents, fans and outlets also help to seal the home and makes it more efficient,” said Alexander.

For those who may begin putting those Christmas decorations in the attic, make sure that area is secured from letting cold air in.

“Applying weather stripping around the attic hatch or pull downstairs can also help out,” said Alexander.

For those who may have pets who have to go outside for walks or other activities be wary of how often they’re outside.

“Of course we want to limit opening doors leading to the outdoors and keep the garage doors closed whenever possible,” said Alexander.

Another reminder to make sure water hoses are disconnected. With colder nights make sure to steady drip hot or cold water from your faucets.

“Lastly, during the day, when we have sunlight, take advantage of that and open the window coverings to allow the sun in the home. At night make sure we close those window coverings to keep out any drafts,” said Alexander.

If you’re prone to being cold make sure to bundle up and wear more layers.
