How to verify sources, avoid donation scams when supporting victims
JACKSON, Tenn. — Many people are still mourning the tragedy that occurred in New Orleans just a few days ago. We have found some tips if you plan to help or make donations to the victims and their families.
Many people are looking to find ways to help those in need who were affected by this horrible event. However, in times like these, it is important to make sure you are giving your resources to trustworthy locations. Unfortunately, scammers take advantage during these hard times.
“Of course, scammers see this. You would think people would have a heart and say, ‘Hey I’m gonna stay away from that because its very personal, and its something I do not want to try to scam people out of.’ But scammers do not care. They’re going to target anyone and everyone,” said Toddnetta Trice, communications specialist with the Better Business Bureau.
The Better Business Bureau has many tips for us to look out for in order to ensure that we are giving to credible sources.
“Research is important. Always research the crowdfunding funds that are being funded. Make sure that you’re taking a deep dive in. Who is doing the postings? Go back to it and see if it is a legitimate victim’s family or loved one who is making these postings. GoFundMe is super popular. It is BBB accredited. So it is a business that we trust,” said Trice.
So if you have any questions at all, Trice gives us a helpful way to find out some more information if we have any worry.
“give.org that is our BBB Give Alliance. That is a whole different sector of the Better Business Bureau where we do prioritize charities and making sure that they are trustworthy charities,” said Trice.
It is also important to contact the Better Business Bureau if you run into anybody that you feel could be a scammer. This is the best way to prevent them from committing future scams.
