Local, state leaders meet for annual legislative meeting

JACKSON, Tenn. — Mayors, state representatives, state senators and other local leaders all came together Wednesday to discuss many different topics.

The meeting, taking place in the Jackson building for the Southwest Tennessee Development District, saw a panel of six leaders from Nashville including Senator Ed Jackson, Representative Chris Todd, Representative Kirk Haston and others that were in attendance.

Before taking questions from the audience, each member of the panel took a few minutes to speak about things they are expecting to focus on this year for the state. Some of these included the school voucher bill, infrastructure needs, juvenile detention centers and many others.

Senator Page Walley, who represents District 26, spoke passionately about how the state should help fix the rounds in our local counties.

“Our infrastructure’s crumbling. Ride up and down our highways and our municipal and county roads to see the challenges that are in front of us. I don’t believe that we as a state have been doing enough to come alongside our leadership of the municipalities and counties to take care of this,” said Walley.

Senator Walley went on to say that he has begun working to return a share of the state sales tax dollars to the municipalities.
