1 dead after morning house fire in Madison County

NOTE: Per the Madison County Fire Department, the fire occurred at a home along Highway 18 in the Medon area.
Early Morning Structure Fire Results in Tragic Loss
At approximately 3:00 a.m., the Madison County Fire Department responded to a 911 call reporting a structure fire at a residence. The homeowner, who advised that individuals were still inside the home, made the call.
Upon arrival, one of the homeowners outside the residence met fire crews. The individual had escaped the fire but sustained injuries. They confirmed that a second resident was still inside the home.
Firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions at the front door and made entry through a rear bedroom window to conduct a primary search. During their search, they located the second victim in an adjacent bedroom. The individual was extricated through the window, and firefighters immediately began life-saving measures.
MedCenter EMS arrived shortly after and took over patient care.
The first victim was airlifted to Regional One in Memphis. Their condition remains unknown at this time.
Tragically, the second victim was transported to Jackson Madison County General Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
