City council finalizes total bond amount during work session

JACKSON, Tenn. — At Thursday’s work session, Jackson City Council members met to discuss the allocation of bond funds.

During this meeting, council members were able to finalize the total bond amount, not to exceed $26 million. Along with that, they provided a few specifications for the allocation of those funds.

These include a fully funded animal shelter and 18 new police cars.

“I think it was an excellent example of how through tough work, through even frustration, that people that genuinely care can come together and try to do the very best for our city,” said Marda Wallace, city councilwoman.

Through deliberations, council members were able to compromise and allocate funds to more pressing matters. They listened to the community’s concerns and prioritized street re-purposing.

“Yes, everything. What we really — what I was standing for was police, fire  and infrastructure. And through really tackling this, we came up with $2.9 million more for infrastructure,” said Wallace.

City council members formally agreed that they have covered all the needs for their department heads.

And for the city moving forward with the projects that they have in line, the next step will be for the city reporter to meet with the bond agency to work out rates.

“I feel very, very confident that we are doing the absolute best for the city. We’re moving forward, but we’re also listening to the constituents that are saying ‘Hey, we’ve got to be able to pay for this.’ So I think it was fantastic work,” said Wallace.

After several months of discussion, the bond amount is finalized. Now, the City of Jackson can move forward with its proposed projects.
