Jackson-Madison County NAACP celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day

JACKSON, Tenn. — There was a full day of events held by the Jackson-Madison County branch of the NAACP.

Many people gathered at the T.R. White Sportsplex Monday morning for a celebration of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which started with a breakfast.

Many different organizations were in attendance including the local NAACP branch who hosted the event. Doris Black, chairperson, spoke with us about why this is important each year.

“We want people to know that we do appreciate all the work that Dr. King has done and put forth for us, and we want to continue those efforts,” said Black.

There was also a heavy youth presence where multiple individuals stood up to give their thoughts and appreciation during this celebration.

“It is important because we want them to actually remember and know their history,” said Black.

A march was planned to the Mount Zion Baptist Church where their program would continue. Of course, the temperatures were extremely low Monday morning, however, this did not change any of the plans.

“Because we are determined. We will not waiver. We know that this is something that Dr. King approved of and we want to continue with the tradition,” said Black.

Multiple local municipalities were involved with the program in various ways.

The Jackson police and fire departments assisted with the march to keep everyone safe and Bolivar’s mayor, Julian McTizic, spoke at the church.

“It means a great deal. We know that they are in approval of what we are doing. They have partnered with us to keep this tradition going,” said Black.

Ms. Black continued by saying it is important to continue to practice non-violence, community, justice and equal rights. She also told us that you should not be sad if you missed the event this year, as you will have an opportunity to attend next year and the years following.
