Jackson-Madison County NAACP speaks against Education Freedom Act
JACKSON, Tenn. — A news conference was held Monday to speak against Governor Lee and the Tennessee legislature members who support the passage of the “Education Freedom Act.”
The gathering, held at the T.R. White sports complex, included the Jackson-Madison County NAACP branch, local clergy, elected officials, community organizations and area residents.
The local NAACP branch says the Education Freedom Act is a “slap in the face” of public education students, parents and teachers. They say the act creates a burden on local school districts and local government funding bodies. They say the proposal would divide funds, keeping the people in the public sector poorer.
“While not all people think like we think or not all people want to be separate because they go to a private school, I understand that’s a choice but to use public dollars; that’s an issue,” said Harrell Carter, Jackson-Madison County NAACP president.
Carter went on to share that there is a choice — to allow lawmakers to create further division or to take it upon themselves to make sure that the people who represent them in Nashville do the right things.
