Americans’ satisfaction with U.S. democracy is at record low, survey reveals
JACKSON, Tenn. — Would you say democracy is working in the country right now?
A new national survey by the Kettering Foundation and Gallup found Americans’ satisfaction with how democracy is working is at a record low. Americans are especially divided over topics concerning racial and ethnic diversity, religion and demographic change.
Experts say there are specific ways to strengthen democracy to ensure it remains the foundation of our experiences.
“We need to get a better sense of who’s feeling left out. There are Americans out there who just feel that they are not valued, they are not respected, they are not taken seriously in this country. We need to understand where there are shared experiences and points of unity about what can be done to rebuild Americans sense of trust and confidence, and also their feeling of belonging within the system,” said Ellyn Maese, Gallup researcher.
