2 more Shelby County cases of West Nile confirmed
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Shelby County health officials have confirmed two more cases of West Nile virus infection.
According to The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/184vvet ), the newest cases are those of a 33-year-old woman and an 82-year-old woman.
The confirmations bring to five the number of cases statewide so far this year.
The first Shelby County case was confirmed in early August in a 74-year-old man. Local health officials say none of those infected with the virus have died.
Since 2002, however, 11 people in Shelby County have died from the mosquito-borne illness.
Fewer than 20 percent of those who get it have symptoms, which include as fever, headache and body aches. Symptoms are more common in people over 50.
