Ways to support the Jackson Animal Care Center’s efforts
JACKSON, Tenn. — The Jackson Animal Care Center is working to tackle animal overpopulation in the community.
The animal care shelter is dedicated to a humane solution to the problems within the Jackson community.
Adopting those who are less likely to find a forever home
The biggest issue the shelter deals with regarding space allowance and capacity is Pitbull and Pitbull mixes. They make up over 90% of their canine intake overall.
With a higher risk of being abused and euthanized and the lowest adoption rate nationwide.
“But then you have the smaller percentage that have seen exactly what humans are capable of when they’re at their worst, and those animals come in needing an aggressive amount of interactive care, triage, trauma response,” said Whitney Owen, director of animal services for the City of Jackson.
Donations can save lives
Their medical program is entirely funded through donations and the goodwill of the public. Most animals come in healthy, but there are some that endure severe trauma.
“We have another dog that came in after being starved, beaten, and then shot, and so she is going to have to have her tail and one of her back legs amputated. The infection in her body was so advanced when we found her that she wasn’t a candidate for surgery, and so she’s been placed with a foster home while she finishes her immediate medical care until she’s stable enough to undergo surgery,” said Owen.
How the JACC is working to provide better care and how to volunteer
The shelter will be moving to a new facility which will give them a 70% increase in kennel space. They have went from caring for 600 animals a year to a little over 2,000 animals a year.
“Having additional space at the new facility is going to give us a little more wiggle room, a little breathing room with those restrictions in place. It’s also going to give us a lot more space to interact with the public, which is going to increase our ability to provide resources to the public,” said Owen.
