Residents gather for peaceful protest in north Jackson
JACKSON, Tenn. — A peaceful protest was held Monday to support the Hispanic community.
Participants didn’t go to work, shop, or send their children to school. Instead, they met at around 9 a.m. at North Park in Jackson. Protestors gathered to be heard and share resources with one another.
They also brought flags and posters.
Participants shared the importance of community, respect, peace and the ability to listen to one another. We spoke to one protester who quoted poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou.
“There’s no greater agony than bearing an untold story and that’s what we have. We have trauma, we have issues that we need to voice. We need to better educate our kids and understand that, you know what, sometimes de-escalation is the way to do it,” said Clisver Alvarez, protestor.
The protest also represented the LGBTQ+ community, women’s rights and human rights.
