“Respiratory viruses, like flu, remain a significant health concern, especially in children,” said Dr. David Bryan, Medical Director with the Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department. “Our sympathies go out to the family during this difficult time.”

A pediatric death is defined as the death of an individual under 18 years of age. We will not provide further details, including specific age or gender, out of respect and privacy for the family.

According to reports from the CDC and the Tennessee Department of Health, current flu levels are very high in Tennessee. Flu symptoms can include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, and chills. Vomiting and diarrhea occur more frequently with children and may lead to dehydration.

“Anytime you are sick with any viral illness, fever control and hydration are extremely important,” Dr. Bryan said. “Drink plenty of water, or drinks with electrolytes, such as Gatorade or Pedialyte. If you are having trouble keeping fluids down, try foods with high water content like popsicles.”

“Tylenol and Motrin can be used to help control fever and body aches,” he added.

In addition to drinking plenty of fluids, those suffering from flu should get plenty of rest. Additionally, if you experience any of the following symptoms, call your healthcare provider right away.

  • Signs of dehydration including, infrequent urination or dark-colored urine, dry mouth/chapped lips
  • Lethargy
  • Shortness of breath or trouble breathing
  • Fever that does not respond to fever-reducing medications

The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department also recommends the following tips to prevent the spread of flu and avoid serious illness:

  • Get an annual flu vaccine.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue.
  • Stay at home when you feel sick.
