Gamma Alpha Omega Chapter of AKA Sorority celebrates Founders’ Day

JACKSON, Tenn.—-It was an exciting day for one local organization that celebrates 117 years.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Gamma Alpha Omega Chapter hosts its Founders’ Day Celebration Sunday.

The event took place in Jackson, beginning at 3 in the afternoon at Unity Temple COGIC located at 369 Lexington Avenue.

Sunday’s event not only honors the founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, but also recognizes local students.

The students from various high schools are recognized for achievements in academics, sports, fine arts and community service.

The program also featured a guest speaker, AKA sister, Toni Franklin.

The organization prides itself on working to uplift the community by providing food items to end weekend hunger for students, and also offering leadership mentoring for local youth.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded in 1908 and is the first African American Greek letter sorority founded at Howard University.
