Small businesses push through nationwide hiring challenges

HENDERSON, Tenn. — A recent survey from the National Federation of Independent Jobs that states that 35% of small businesses are facing hiring challenges.

Here in West Tennessee, we love and support the countless number of small businesses in our area.

We were able to sit down with Tim West, owner of Besso’s Coffee in Henderson, about his thoughts on the hiring process.

“I tell my employees that we don’t look for perfection, we look for progress,” West said. “We want you to grow into the role. That means we have to find employees that are willing to do that.”

West tells us that one of the great things about owning a small business in a small town is working with other small business owners. He says they see each other as partners, not competitors. They are able to have conversations to help not only each other grow, but the community as well.

“A big conversation of that is hiring and finding quality employees and enough quality employee,” said West. “Enough employees who need to work, want to work, and love to work. Those are qualities that we are looking for.”

Finally, West gave us a message for people who are potentially looking to work at a small business, or consumers who are looking to support one.

“Find your place. Whatever business it is. Find that small business that fits who you are, your preferences, and your taste and enjoy that place,” West said.

He also mentioned to us that our cities, counties, and Chambers of Commerce are a huge help in small businesses thriving and succeeding.

The study also shows that the transportation, construction, and manufacturing sectors are facing some of the biggest challenges when it comes to hiring.
