Rivers rising in northwest Tennessee with wet weekend ahead

JACKSON, Tenn. — Rivers around West Tennessee are rising, especially the Obion River as it runs through Weakley, Obion, and Dyer counties.

Especially in southern Obion County, the river is already near flood stage and is forecast to move into the minor flood stage.

Friday afternoon, a look from the bridge on Old Turnpike Road near Rives showed that water was rushing quickly and was near the base of the bridge.

The Weather Prediction Center has upgraded us to a level four, a high risk for excessive rainfall.

Local county EMA directors met with the National Weather Service in Memphis Friday afternoon to discuss the threats of both river flooding and flash flooding, as well as Saturday’s severe weather threat.

We reached out to Dyer County EMA Director James Medling to hear his plan for the storm.

“We pushed out information to all our department heads,” Medling said. “The Red Cross has contacted us this morning and they’re available should we need any services from them also. Remember the weather service motto, ‘turn around, don’t drown.'”

Minor to moderate flooding is expected across northwest Tennessee.
