Henderson County Commission votes for new fire chief, program for residents

HENDERSON COUNTY, Tenn. — One local county held a meeting to discuss new business.

The Henderson County Commission voted for the new fire chief, as well as a new program for residents in Tuesday night’s meeting.

“The way the process works in Henderson County, the fire district chief — they held the interviews and did the selection of the fire chief. They made the recommendation to the county commission tonight,” said Mayor Robbie McCready.

Tuesday evening a new Henderson County Fire Chief was selected, following the passing of Chief Lynn Murphy in December of 2024.

“Tonight, the county commissioners selected Cody Usery as the new fire chief. Cody has years of experience and we’re excited to have him,” said Mayor McCready.

Along with that, the commissioners voted to approve the Residential Home Inspection program.

“Last month the planning commission made a recommendation to the full county commission that we adopt residential home inspections. It’s going to be ran by the state, so a new residential construction a new build will have a permitting process,” said Mayor McCready.

This is due to some homes being built in the past that had no water, electricity, or street access. Not only was this not safe, this was causing a strain on first responders.

“As a result of that we established a planning commission and that planning commission started to lean in and ensure that our constituents are not being taken advantage of on fraudulent practices,” said Mayor McCready.

Commissioners also voted on recognizing their dispatchers as first responders.

“They may not be going to the call or actually hands on the scene but they are the voices to the officers leading them there. They are the voice to the victims and creating the calm voice. So what we want to do is just recognize them and push the state to recognize them. They’re not clerks they are first responders,” said Mayor McCready.

The next county commission meeting will be held March 11 at 7 p.m.
