Pinson Mounds to offer volunteer opportunity this weekend

PINSON, Tenn. — A local state park is offering a volunteer opportunity.

Pinson Mounds is a gorgeous local state park in Madison County. It covers over 1,200 acres and has at least 15 Native American mounds. We were able to speak to a park ranger to learn more about the park.

“So Pinson Mounds is a sacred site to the indigenous descendants that we still have today. It is a super special place even to me personally. This site holds the history of people who were here 2,000 years ago. Behind us is Saul’s Mound. This is the second largest mound in the United States,” said Dedra Ekberg, park ranger at Pinson Mounds.

There are events that go on at Pinson Mounds all year long. However, there is a special volunteer event occurring in just a few days.

“So the Weed Wrangle is actually going to be this weekend, March 1. We are going to be kind of looking at the grounds and kind of ‘beauty-ing’ up the park before the spring gets here. So we’re just kind of updating the grounds and seeing what needs to be done. We’re just having some fun while we’re doing it in this nice sunshine,” said Ekberg.

Ekberg says that this can be a fun event for the whole family to enjoy.

“We allow up to 25 people. It’s for all ages. So kids, adults, grandparents can come out and help us. We’re gonna be outside. You guys are going to be hanging out with me and one of my other staff members. Just hanging out in the sunshine,” said Ekberg.

The event is going to last from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. To register for this event, click here.
