Equal Pay Day, downtown development discussed in latest City Council meeting
JACKSON, Tenn. — The Jackson City Council held their regularly scheduled monthly meeting Tuesday morning.
The morning started with a proclamation by Mayor Scott Conger. This proclamation announced a recognition of a specific day in March.
“Equal Pay Day marks the day that wages paid to American women catch up to wages paid to men in the previous year,” said Mayor Conger. “Now therefore we, Scott Conger, Mayor of Jackson, Tennessee, AJ Massey, Mayor of Madison County, Tennessee, do hereby proclaim March 25, 2025 as Equal Pay Day in Jackson-Madison County, Tennessee.”
Next, there was an annual report from the Jackson Downtown Development Corporation. Beth Ann Simpson is the director, and she took some time to explain all of the accomplishments they made last year, including ones at theLOCAL.
“It has truly become a pipeline for small business development downtown,” Simpson said. “With the past 12 tenants, seven of those have scaled up to larger space downtown.”
We also were able to speak with Mayor Conger after the meeting about the development of downtown over the last few years.
“So you can have other areas of the city that are vibrant, but if your downtown is not vibrant, at some point those other parts of the city won’t be vibrant,” Conger said.
We also received a couple of lists that seem to be what roads plan on being paved this year in Jackson.
Each list has multiple roads in each district. However, it is currently unconfirmed when paving will begin.
There were also quite a few students from JCM’s Early College High in attendance at Tuesday’s meeting.
