The Jackson Boxing Club legacy continues at its new location in Lincoln Courts
JACKSON, Tenn.– One Hub City legacy continues to make its mark but at a new location.
The Jackson Boxing Club had a ribbon cutting at their new location in Lincoln Courts, Thursday.
“If you are a kid out there and you want to travel and see the world come on down to the boxing club. We will be glad to work with you and God knows where you may end up at,” said Obie Beard, head coach for Jackson Boxing Club.
He took the time to reflect on why this matters so much to him and how it can help others.
“It feels good because you know we’re doing something for the kids and give them something to do and get them out of trouble. I was one of those kids when I was boxing about 5 years old. I had to get out the house and this sport got me out the house,” he says.
The Jackson Boxing Club was donated to the Jackson Equity Project by Jackson Housing Authority.
With this accomplishment the boxing club can now welcome children from any neighborhood from ages 5 to 18.
“Being located here in Lincoln Courts in this central place, we want to be in contact and near families and youth. While that is our age group we want people to feel they are welcomed,” Adrienne Taylor, chair for the Jackson Equity Project, adds.
Coach Beard also shares his goals outside of the ring that will help youth.
“My goal is to come in here and start the kids off first with doing their homework and then we go do some boxing. Because they need to know how important it is to make sure you have your homework done and going to school and get a good education,” Beard adds.
With the help of the Jackson Equity Project the Jackson Boxing Club is free to those who attend.
“Our hope is to garner more support, more funds to do things like do trips. Create an athletic league where children are able to travel and compete,” Taylor shares.
On Saturday April 26, the Jackson Equity Project will host a car show to raise funds for the Jackson Boxing Club.
