Jackson Fire Department seeks new firefighters

JACKSON, Tenn. — Do you have what it takes to be a firefighter? The Jackson Fire Department’s recruitment campaign is set to begin next week.

Every day, firefighters risk their lives to protect and serve our communities. They are the first responders to disasters, always ready to leap into action when seconds count.

But for many, becoming a firefighter is more than just a job; it’s a calling.

“Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be a firefighter because I love helping people,” said Duane Seals, firefighter and Community Risk Specialist with JFD.

“It takes hard work, dedication, and hustle,” said Rob Johnson, firefighter and instructor.

“And just passion, you have to care about your community, care about other people,” said Latrell Billingsley, JFD Fire Marshal.

It’s not just about responding to emergencies. Firefighters are also vital community members — teaching fire safety, offering support, and even working with local officials to make the community stronger and safer.

“You meet and you work and train with a group of guys that become in a sense, an extended family to you,” Johnson said. “So you know you go to work with your friends and it’s not really work, it’s just the guys getting together, having a good time.”

While the job is demanding and sometimes dangerous, the rewards are immeasurable.

“We have that mission of always helping the people in the City of Jackson,” Johnson said. “There is a risk. There’s a huge risk, but we’re going to risk a lot to save a lot.”

So, if you’ve ever wondered if you have what it takes to be a firefighter, the answer might just be yes.

If you’re ready to rise to the challenge and protect your community, JFD encourages you to attend attend their information sessions on March 19, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., or March 22, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

“We need more help. We need females. We needs males,” Seals said.

“What we’re doing is bigger than us, you understand that,” Billingsley said. “At the end of the day, if I can help someone on their worst day, give them a little bit of peace, or to be able to help them in their worst time, then I feel like I’ve done a good job.”

The information sessions will be held at the Jackson Fire Department headquarters at 720 South Highland Avenue Jackson. Visit their Facebook page for updates and more information.
