Selmer residents collect donations for flood victims
SELMER, Tenn. — Collections for Hurricane Harvey victims are still underway across West Tennessee. Community members in Selmer packed a truck with cleaning supplies, hundreds of water bottles, food and much more ready to go to families affected by the storm.

In just a week, community members loaded a tractor-trailer with donations for people in Texas.
“We’re always looking for ways to help people any way we can, and that’s what we do,” lead organizer Dan Michael said.
Whenever a tragic event occurs, organizers said the Selmer community pulls together to lend a helping hand.
“Did this for Louisiana, we’re doing it for Texas now, and if we have to we’ll do it for Florida too,” Michael said. “It’s just what Christians do. We take care of our brothers and sisters no matter where they’re at.”
Every donation, whether big or small, supports the many flood victims who are left dealing with the devastation.
“Look what we accomplished. So that just lets you know we got some real good citizens that love our community and also love other communities as well, so we’re very blessed,” volunteer and donor Nicky Atkins said.
The owner of a local trucking company, Danny Elam, is providing transportation and a driver to get the items to Texas.
“He’s taking it to the church group that I requested, and he’s doing this without hesitation,” Michael said. “I can’t say enough good about him. He’s giving a lot for this.”
Selmer Mayor John Smith said it makes him proud to see so many volunteers pulling together for the greater good.
“We’re real proud and just honored to be in a community that’s willing to give so much back to these people in Houston,” Mayor Smith said.
Organizers said they are thankful for everyone who donated. Florida is next in line for assistance after Hurricane Irma makes landfall.
