Educator of the Week: Kristen Bomar

It’s time now to recognize our Educator of the Week, brought to you by the Tennessee Education Lottery.

Kristen Bomar is a Pre-K teacher at West Hardin Elementary School.

She credits her faith as the reason behind her vocation.

“I think teaching is a calling,” Bomar said. “It’s just something that God placed on my heart a long time ago, and it is my little mission field in the world that he has placed me in.”

This is Bomar’s 19th year teaching, and she shares her favorite part of being an educator.

“I think it’s probably the excitement of the kids,” she said. “With four-year-olds, there’s always excitement, and so their excitement kinda feeds into me and back and forth, and so they’re always learning, always growing, and there’s always something fun going on.”

Bomar explains the moment she realized that teaching was the path for her.

“It was just a moment in time when I was in college. I was actually a journalism major at Union University when I started out, and I spent winter break subbing here in Hardin County, and just two days in a Kindergarten classroom changed my path completely.”

Bomar shares the variety of teaching methods she uses.

“The main thing with Pre-K and my teaching is that I make it very relational. We build a family from the very beginning with their families and with the students and all of us, just one big happy family. We use small groups when we work together, we use large groups, we vary our learning from moving around, activities, and dancing and singing and learning centers so it’s, it’s good for everybody.”

Bomar offers encouragement to future educators.

“I would say jump right in and don’t be afraid. It’s hard but it’s worth it.”

Bomar is grateful for her nomination.

“I am absolutely humbled to get this recognition. It’s just, teachers don’t go into the profession to win awards and be recognized, we just go into the profession to love kids and teach them and nurture them for the future, so I’m just very thankful.”

Bomar is now eligible for the Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Month award.
