Possible building collapse in Rutherford leads to multiple closures
RUTHERFORD, Tenn. — An incident in the town of Rutherford causes the closure of several businesses and a main road.
Over in Rutherford, parts of East Main Street, as well as several businesses, are closed due to the possible collapse of the two story building downtown.
According to the town of Rutherford, on Monday afternoon, a portion of the bricks on the building fell onto the sidewalk and in the street.
Also, a car parked near the building was damaged.
“The fire marshal in Jackson, our fire chief contacted them about the fall because yesterday when that fell, there were some vehicles under that that was damaged, so I’m very concerned about public safety at this point,” said Sandy Simpson, Rutherford Mayor and owner of Changes salon.
Several businesses were ordered to close Monday and Tuesday because they were located inside the fall zone.
We’ve reached out to several business owners that were directly impacted by this incident. Main Street Fitness owner Travis Hamilton issued out a statement.
He says: “It’s been incredibly tough, not just for us but for the other businesses downtown.”
This is an unfortunate incident, especially during prom season. Luckily, Pate’s Department Store and Rutherford City Hall partnered to do pickups and try-ons at the city hall from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday.
“I cant stress enough how urgent this is for this man to get this building handled so that this is not an ongoing issue — so this doesn’t keep happening. I don’t want him to keep putting it off. I want it down. The town wants it down. As the mayor and the board of alderman, we have been dealing with this for months now,” said Simpson.
The owner of the two story building and city officials are working to resolve this issue as quickly as they can.
