Gov’t Shutdown Forces West Tennessee Park to Close
SHILOH, Tenn. — It’s day two of the federal government shutdown which has closed Shiloh National Military Park here in West Tennessee. If you’re thinking about taking a trip to the park, you’ll be greeted at the door with signs that says, “The park is closed due to the federal government shutdown.” Daniel Henson lives in Hardin county and he says closing the park will have a ripple effect on the community. “It hurts all the people around here that’s got restaurants, Henson said. “It hurts the people around here that got hotels, it hurts all the county.” Just some of the reasons Henson wants the government to come up with a solution…fast. “They should quit playing politics and look at the things that need to be important,” Henson said. “Quit worrying about the other countries out here and everywhere else and worry about the United States.” Christy Sowell lives right down the street from the park and didn’t know it was closed. She says this park was one of her childhood playgrounds. “School kids ain’t gonna have a chance to learn a part of history that’s been around for a long time,” Sowell said. Until congress comes up with a solution the shutdown will continue, forcing park officials to sit and wait. WBBJ called the park for an official statement; but the park’s automated voicemail says they’re not there and unable to check messages, until the shutdown is over.
