Akbari wins Democratic primary for vacant seat

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Raumesh A. Akbari has won the Democratic primary for the House seat that was held by Rep. Lois DeBerry until her death earlier this year.

The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/1fhrryC) reports Akbari defeated six others who ran for the seat in Tuesday’s special primary election.

She had 502 votes, which was nearly 28 percent of 1,812 that were cast. Terica Lamb came in second with 399 and Kemba Ford, the daughter of former state Sen. John Ford, was third with 355.

DeBerry died in July after a nearly five-year bout with pancreatic cancer. The Memphis Democrat had represented District 91 since 1972.

Akbari will face Independent candidate James L. Tomasik in the Nov. 21 general election. The winner will represent the district until the November 2014 regular election.
