The Salvation Army Responds to Devastating EF-3 Tornado in Selmer, Tennessee
Selmer, TN – In the wake of the EF-3 tornado that struck Selmer, Tennessee, on Thursday, April 3, The Salvation Army of Jackson has mobilized to provide immediate relief and support to those impacted by the deadly storm. With winds reaching up to 160 mph, the tornado left a trail of devastation across McNairy County, resulting in three confirmed fatalities and damage to more than 300 structures—over 100 of which were completely destroyed.
Late Thursday evening, The Salvation Army received a request from local officials to provide disaster relief services. By Friday morning, The Salvation Army was on the ground in Selmer, offering hot meals, hydration, and emotional and spiritual care to survivors and first responders.
Disaster services are being coordinated from the Selmer Civic Center, located at 230 N 5th Street. Volunteers and staff are currently serving 100 meals at breakfast and more than 250 meals each for lunch and dinner. In addition to food and water, The Salvation Army is offering comfort and a listening ear to residents who have lost so much. Since Friday, The Salvation Army has served the following in Selmer:
- 1,063 meals
- 1,811 drinks
- 826 snacks
- 62 emotional & spiritual care contacts
Longtime Salvation Army volunteer Roger Fowler, who has been serving in Selmer since the response began, reports that many roads remain impassable in the hardest-hit areas. “Some roads are completely wiped out. It’s been hard to reach certain communities, and each night we’ve had more storms, which makes everything more difficult—including flooded roads,” Fowler said.
Fowler also shared the story of one local woman whose home was spared while every house around hers was destroyed. She has since devoted herself to helping her neighbors recover—cooking meals and distributing supplies with compassion and care. “People are hurting, but they’re helping each other. It’s humbling to see,” he added.
The Salvation Army continues to coordinate closely with local and state officials and remains committed to serving Selmer and surrounding areas for as long as needed.
