Locals Bowl to Raise Awareness For Breast Cancer

JACKSON, Tenn. — Women in Tennessee have a greater chance of dying from breast cancer according to State Health Department records. Tennessee was ranked 12th in the country for the greatest number of breast cancer related deaths in 2005-2009. One group of women who have beaten the odds are battling for those who haven’t in “Bowling for Boobies”, a competition sponsored by members of the International Masons order of the Eastern Star who have partnered with the American Cancer Society. “It’s good to see everybody come out and help out,” Dave Henley, an 18 year breast cancer survivor said. “All of the events they have for it is real important, to raise money to help get it to where we can get rid of Cancer forever. Breast cancer, according to the experts, is the leading diagnosis for new cancer cases in Tennessee and the second leading cause of cancer deaths. Survivors said the first step in fighting back is raising awareness. “It’s very important because cancer doesn’t hurt so the only way you’re going to know is if you go get a mammogram done and go ahead and get checked with a yearly physical,” Cancer survivor Lasonya Thomas said. The tournament gives every bowler a chance to compete and make a difference in the lives of breast cancer survivors and those who are still fighting their battle against the disease. “That’s the main thing you just tell yourself that I’m not giving up I’m going through,” Henley said. Organizers said half of the bowling tournament proceeds were donated to breast cancer research. Bowling for Boobies’ effort raised $150 dollars for breast cancer research. Participants said they are working to make this fundraiser an annual event.
