JSCC teaches nursing students emergency preparedness with mock disaster

JACKSON, Tenn. — A mock disaster took place Thursday to teach nursing students emergency preparedness.

The event was held at the softball field at Jackson State Community College. Students learned to perform medical care in various environments and situations alongside local emergency agencies.

Students acted in the role of first responders, victims, bystanders and secondary triage.

This year’s theme was an active shooter scenario.

“Unfortunately, those emergencies are active shooters or disasters and, when you train and are prepared, when they happen we’re ready to go and we get to learn it with the best who do it for a living,” said Cassie Revelle, associate professor of nursing.

This event has been happening twice a year since 2012. Scenarios in previous years have included explosions, tornado aftermath and more.
