Tennessee tax deadline extended due to recent storms

JACKSON, Tenn. — Tuesday is the deadline for Americans to file their taxes, but Tennesseans have been given an extension due to the recent storms.

The Internal Revenue Service announced Monday, they are extending the filing deadline for all Tennesseans. Stacy Engle, spokesperson for the IRS, shares more about the announcement.

“All of Tennessee has been included in the delay of filing. Tennessee residents, businesses and folks doing business in Tennessee are eligible to file up until November 3 now and that includes also making some payments,” said Engle.

The only thing that residents would need to ensure is that their address is correct and up-to-date with the IRS.

“If you have recently been affected by the storms and say you did have some damage or you lost some of your records or you never received your records because where you worked, they didn’t have them or they haven’t provided them to you. The first thing you need to do is definitely before you file, try to get all of your records that you can find. If you are unable to get them, or you’re unable to find them, first reach out to whoever paid you the money or issued the document. A lot of the time the internal revenue service has already received a copy of it, so they may be able to help you,” said Engle.

If you are still planning to file soon, Engle provides some tips for you.

“The best thing to do is to make sure that you have all of your tax documentation prepared before you start. Make sure you have all of your income documents, social security numbers, bank accounts, the correct spelling for everyone that’s listed on the tax return because those little things can cause big delays,” said Engle.
