Man charged in deadly shooting appears in court; victim’s mother speaks out

JACKSON, Tenn. — “I’m happy to know that he’s at peace right now,” Jacqueline Cobb said.

For the first time, the mother of Daithan Cobb, who was shot in January speaks out. Her son died Sunday at Regional One Medical in Memphis as a result of injuries sustained in the Jan. 28 shooting.

“He’s in a better place now because this is the Hell that we are in, this wicked crazy world. I no longer have to worry about protecting him,” Cobb said.

Just 30 minutes before making her first public statement, the man charged with pulling the trigger made his second court appearance.

Braxton Taylor, 19, had his charges upgraded from attempted first-degree murder to first-degree murder after police say he shot Cobb multiple times near North Highland Avenue.

Witnesses told police they saw Taylor and Cobb argue minutes before they say Taylor pulled the trigger, shooting Cobb in the back and hip.

Police even say Taylor called the Jackson Police Department’s dispatch center later that night asking if he had any warrants.

“I miss my son, but I know he is in a better place. That’s the peace that’s been getting me through this,” Cobb said.

Cobb says her family, church family and, most importantly, God has gotten her through this rough time.

“I’m glad they caught him. Justice will be served, and I hope they give him the max,” Cobb said.

Even in grief and anger, her prayers are still with the family of the suspect.

“I pray for his family and their strength because they lost a son also,” Cobb said.

What she is choosing to cling to most are the memories 20-year-old Daithan leaves behind.

“He was such a big teddy bear, and that’s what everyone keeps saying. He was so funny, so loving,” Cobb said.

Taylor remains behind bars. His bail was set at $150,000, but Jackson City Court Judge Blake Anderson has revoked his bond after the new charges.
