Corrections officer accused of bringing guns on prison property; reportedly threatened church

WAYNE COUNTY, Tenn. — A corrections officer is accused of bringing three weapons onto prison property in Clifton, just across the Tennessee River near Savannah, and he may face additional charges of threatening to shoot up a church in rural West Tennessee.

The incident started in Henderson County with a report that Daniel Toler threatened to shoot up a church in Huron.

Toler works at the CCA prison in Clifton.

Clifton police arrested Toler Sunday morning, accusing him of bringing three weapons onto prison property in his car.

According to an affidavit, Toler had an AR-15, an assault-style shotgun, a bolt-action rifle, and extra loaded magazines.

Clifton City Manager Doug Kibbey says Toler had about 1,000 to 1,500 rounds of ammunition.

“I’m just glad we were able to intervene so that it did not escalate into something that could have been very tragic for our community, especially here in the state of Tennessee,” Kibbey said.

Investigators believe Toler was going to carry out the threat and possibly shoot up a church Sunday night after work.

Toler is being held in Wayne County Jail.
