Medina schools placed on lockdown after threatening Snapchat post

GIBSON CO., Tenn. — In Gibson County, the Medina schools were placed on a soft lockdown Friday.

Authorities say Snapchat posts led to Gibson County deputies and Medina police at all three schools in the city as a precaution.

Gibson county sheriff Paul Thomas says he was notified of the threat at South Gibson County High School this morning by an SRO at the school.

Thomas says these type of threats are something that law enforcement and school officials take seriously.

“The parents need to really stress to these kids that these random comments they make aren’t funny. We take them seriously. It causes a whole disruption in the process. The classes couldn’t change on time. We’ve got parents coming up here to get their kids out of school now. It just disrupts the whole thing. What started as a joke and it’s criminal. It’s criminal in nature and we’re going to deal with it,” Thomas said.

Thomas says the Gibson County Special School District and the principal at the high school have cooperated with the investigation. Thomas says the department has contacted Snapchat in response to the threat.
