Local residents celebrate Arbor Day with tree planting ceremony
JACKSON, Tenn. — Jackson Parks and Recreation celebrates Arbor Day with a special event.
Participants gathered in the parking lot of Cypress Grove Nature Park for an informative ceremony and a flowering dogwood tree planting. This was followed by a leaf rubbing activity.
The U.S. had a significant deforestation problem around the time of the industrial revolution in the 1800s. However, a large portion of forests have returned, mainly due to natural regeneration.
“You know, one of the things about Arbor Day is that, you know, we love trees, we love to plant them, and therefore Arbor Day was founded in order to plant trees to help us to recover the trees that were cut down so much during that time period,” said Andy Madison, conservation biology professor at Union University.
A little Arbor Day fun fact, the state tree of Tennessee is the Tulip Poplar.
