Bargaining Rights Bill Back To Committee
The sponsor of a bill to strip teachers of their collective bargaining rights has moved the measure back to the Senate Education Committee.
The measure sponsored by Republican Sen. Jack Johnson of Franklin cleared the same panel in February on a 6-3 party line vote, but had not received a full Senate vote as the House has advanced a version that would stop short of eliminating union negotiations altogether.
Republican Gov. Bill Haslam has endorsed the House GOP version that would shield specific areas like merit pay and evaluation standards from negotiations.
The House version was put on hold this week while lawmakers await expected changes to the Senate bill. Both chambers must pass the same bill before it can head for the governor’s consideration.
