Man suffers self-inflicted injury during standoff

Dyer County Sheriff’s Office Responds to Standoff Incident
Dyer County, TN – On May 2, 2025, deputies with the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office were involved in a standoff with an individual suffering from mental illness who was armed with a pistol. The situation unfolded over several hours as officers worked diligently to negotiate with the individual in an effort to safely resolve the incident.
Throughout the standoff, deputies prioritized the safety of the individual and the surrounding community. Tragically, the situation escalated, and the individual shot himself. Deputies on the scene immediately rendered aid until Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived. The individual was subsequently transported to a local hospital for stabilization before being transferred to a Level One trauma center in Memphis, TN.
We are relieved to report that no officers were injured during this incident.
“Mental illness touches every family, and we understand the impact it has on individuals and their loved ones,” said Jeff Box, Sheriff of Dyer County. “Our thoughts are with the individual involved in this incident, and we are hopeful that once he fully recovers, he can seek the help and support he needs.”
