Gibson County Special Olympics Field Day kicks off in Trenton
TRENTON, Tenn. — Gibson County held their Special Olympics Field Day on Monday.
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
Monday’s event, hosted at Peabody High School at the sports complex, began with local police and firefighters bringing in a torch for the opening ceremony. Events included the standing long jump, meter runs and more with ribbons given out at each station.
“Every bit of it is worth it and whenever we see them, you know, when the torch run starts and everybody is kinda all together from all across Gibson County, you know, like everybody’s united with that one purpose of supporting individuals with disabilities and that’s how it’s supposed to be,” said Rachel Hays, Special Olympics co-director.
Though participants must be above the age of 8 and have an intellectual delay, there is no maximum age limit for the special Olympics, allowing athletes to return year after year.
