Severe Storm Threat Friday Evening/Night, More Storms Expected Sunday!

WBBJ 7 Forecast Update

WBBJ 7 Forecast Update:

Any outdoor plans will be good to go for the next few hours. The storms will move in between 6-8 PM in northwest Tennessee and drop to the southeast this evening. The storms are expected to show up in Jackson between 8-10pm. Gusty straight line winds up to 75 MPH will be the most likely threat. That being said, there could be a strong tornado or two or some very large hail between 7-9pm as the storms start to move through.

As the storms track through they will take on more of a linear shape (straight line). The storms will slowly weaken as they move across West Tennessee due to less available energy after the sun goes down. The storms will move out of our area by 11pm-midnight tonight. We will be tracking them very closely tonight in the 7 Storm Team Weather Center. Catch the latest forecast information here.

THIS WEEK:

The greatest severe weather threat this week will be here Friday evening into Friday night. There was a couple strong storms Friday morning but it will be Friday evening into Friday night that we need to stay weather aware. We are already under a level 3. enhanced risk with a level 4 (moderate risk) being bei9ng issue north of I-40 in our northern counties. The setup looks quite concerning as of now and it is something we are going to need to keep a close eye this evening as the storms develop. Severe weather looks likely including the possibility of a couple of strong tornadoes in the evening hours before transitioning to more of a straight line wind threat after the sun goes down.

A few supercell rotating storms will develop Friday afternoon & evening that will have the potential of producing a few tornadoes, most of those will stay just north of West Tennessee but some could drop far enough south to hit a few of us! A line of storms producing gusty winds will move through in the late evening & night time hours. Those storms will weaken as the night goes on & track to the southeast. Friday will be a warm and humid day as well with highs reaching the mid to upper 80s again and Friday night lows will drop to the upper 60s. The winds will again come out of the southwest and remain quite breezy as the system moves through. Here is a look at timing of the potential storms.

THE WEEKEND:

The forecast this weekend looks to be a challenging one as we are likely going to be dealing with a stalled out cold front. How far south it stalls out will make a big difference on what our weather is going to be like this weekend. As of now we are expecting the front to stall out just south of us on Saturday keeping showers away for most of the day. There could be a few storms before the sun comes up Saturday morning as the front passes through. Highs on Saturday will reach the mid 80s and the winds are expected to come out of the west. Skies will be mostly cloudy in the morning but will try to break up some as the day goes on. There could be a few strong storms returning Saturday night as well as some redevelopment is likely that will last into Sunday.

On Sunday, the front is likely going to lift back through bringing another round of showers and storms with it. There is a chance for some severe storms on Sunday too but it is a bit too early to have many details on who is most likely to be impacted and when as of now! Highs on Sunday reach the low to mid 80s as the front will lift through in the afternoon or evening hours. The winds will shift back to the southwest late in the day. Expect mostly cloudy skies on Sunday and some of the showers could stick around into the start of next week as well. The weekend forecast could change some so do not cancel your weekend plans yet but keep a close eye on the forecast this week as we develop more confidence in the forecast.

NEXT WEEK:

Storms are expected to pop back up at times Monday morning and there could be some additional development later in the day on Monday as well. The next round of potential severe storms looks to be here next Tuesday. It is a little too early to tell exactly who and when on Tuesday, but some strong storms appear to be likely. The storms could linger overnight into Wednesday morning but we should dry out during the day on Wednesday and wrap up the work week with a couple dry days on Thursday and Friday.

Highs will in the mid to upper 8os on Monday, low to mid 80s on Tuesday. As the front passes Tuesday night cooler weather will move in for Wednesday and Thursday next week. Highs will only reach the low 70s at best on Thursday and in the mid 70s on Friday. Skies will remain mostly cloudy to kick off the week but will clear out towards the back half of the work week as well. The winds are forecast to come out of the southwest to start the week but will turn to the northwest on Wednesday or Thursday!
