McNairy County nonprofit works to rebuild in the wake of April’s deadly tornado
SELMER, Tenn. — As one McNairy County community is sifting though what’s left, a lifeline to many local residents is attempting to get back on its feet to help storm victims return to a sense of normalcy.

Jesus Cares is a nonprofit organization that provides coordinated benevolent assistance and hope to those in crisis. The nonprofit has two thrift stores, one in Adamsville and one in Selmer.
Due to tornado damage, the Jesus Cares Thrift Store in Selmer is having to rebuild at a new facility in McNairy County.
“This building actually used to be the Fred’s building. We are setting up back again here. We’ve got some clothes out so far. We’re doing it a little bit at a time. We’ve got some furniture over here, we’ve got the store cleaned up, and we’re hoping to get get pushed to be open soon,” said Mary Jo Combs, store manager for Jesus Cares of McNairy.
“We are in dire need of clothes racks. We will take shelving. Plus, like the others have already said we could use your time. If you could come here and donate we would be more than glad for you to come and give your time or whatever donations you need,” said Gail McCullar, board member for Jesus Cares of McNairy.
The Jesus Cares Organization assists residents with housing, rehabilitation opportunities, toiletries, apparel, electronics, furniture and utility payments.
Donations and volunteers with the nonprofit have been essential with the goal of continued growth and community involvement .
“I know that it hurt Selmer when our store got hit by the tornado, but we’ve also enjoyed having new people to come in and help when it was needed as soon as the tornado hit,” said Brenda Taube, volunteer for Jesus Cares of McNairy.
Before the storm damage the Jesus Cares organization was building tiny homes for those that are homeless and in need of housing.
Plans are for that project to continue as builders work to repair minor damage for those that were fortunate enough to miss the storms path.
The organizer with Jesus Cares tells me there will be requirements to live in these homes.
When the new Jesus Cares Thrift Store in Selmer reopens, their store hours will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
