Hershel Leon Collins

Born on February 13, 1935, in Medon, Tennessee, Hershel was the son of the late Ervin Dewitt Collins and Annie Vester Helton Collins. He lived a simple, meaningful life and was known for his warmth, storytelling, and love of music. One of his greatest joys was sharing memories of his time traveling with the late Carl Perkins—writing songs and crossing paths with many well-known figures in the music world. Among his favorite tales was the time he met Patsy Cline backstage at the Grand Ole Opry and proudly recalled getting a kiss from the country music legend.

In addition to his parents, Hershel was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy Luelene Collins; and his siblings, Beverly Ann Collins, Ray Collins, Inez Young, Bill Collins, Harold Collins, Thomas (Tom) Collins, Joe Collins, and Marilyn Hopper.

He is survived by his siblings, Robert “Buck” Collins, Betty Nell Jones, and Elton “Coonie” Collins; a very special caregiver and dear friend, Pat Collins; and many loving nieces and nephews who will carry on his stories and memory.

Hershel will be remembered for his kind heart, humble spirit, and the joy he brought to all who knew him.

A service to celebrate the life of Hershel Collins will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2025 at the South Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons with Bro. Opie Dodrill officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens. The family will begin receiving friends beginning at 12 pm, one hour prior to the service.
