Special election to be held after Rep. Green announces retirement from Congress

JACKSON, Tenn. — One Congressman is officially leaving office after nearly four decades of public service.

Rep. Mark Green

Monday, Congressman Mark Green announced his retirement from the House of Representatives.

In a press release, he states he was offered a job in the private sector and “will resign as soon as the house votes once again on the reconciliation package.”

As Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, Representative Green planned to retire in 2024 but reconsidered to ensure legislation passed through Congress, including President Trump’s border security measures.

An election will be coming up to replace Representative Green. As this is a special election, every county will be expected to provide funding.

This applies to District 7, which includes Decatur and Benton Counties.

We spoke with local election offices who are awaiting a letter from Governor Bill Lee with more information on when the election will be held.

Governor Lee is likely to share more after Representative Green has officially left office, which could be as early as July.

Throughout his tenure, Green passed numerous bills and has been an advocate for veterans. His first bill to congress was the “Protecting Gold Star Spouses Act.” He also led the bipartisan “K-2 Veterans Toxic Exposure Accountability Act of 2020.”

Representative Green released a statement sharing it was “an honor of a lifetime to represent the people of Tennessee in Congress.”
