Summer safety camp teaches youth important lessons for everyday life
JACKSON, Tenn. — For the next couple of days, one summer program invites the youth to come learn about safety in all forms.
From Tuesday, June 17, until Thursday, June 19, the United 2A Collective and Urban Defense Gun Club Inc. will host a safety class for ages 2 to 21.
“My favorite part about it is the youth. They get to have fun. They will do a lot of different activities. They will remember what we’re teaching them with these activities,” said Terrill Perry, president of the Urban Defense Club.
Each day the youth will learn a new form of safety and how to apply it in their everyday lives. Each learning day is completely free.
Activities so far have taught individuals about safety in different forms such as public, personal and home.
“We’re introducing our Supercats, which is our summer firearm safety as well. On the second or the third day we’ll be teaching firearm safety. What they should do if they ever encounter a firearm, who they should tell,” said Perry.
Organizers say that the summer time is one of the most vulnerable times for children.
“Right now they’re out in the summer and all types of dangers are lurking. So, they need to be able to protect themselves and know situational awareness on what’s going on around them,” said Perry.
Attendees were given activity books and learned songs that can be remembered if they are ever in an unsafe situation.
“Situational awareness, they’re learning about water danger, fire danger–just any type of danger–stranger danger as well,” said Perry.
For their final day, they will show their families what they have learned and receive awards for their knowledge and attendance.
